Twenty years connecting what people live with what organizations need to build.

Deborah gathers insight by observing how people live, how they make choices and how they create meaning from those choices, and above all how that meaning shapes brand objectives. Drawing on close observation of everyday behaviour and more than 200 businesses, she turns what she sees into brand strategies, identities, platforms and experiences.

Her work bridges the emerging-consumer gaps organizations often struggle to close: between academic knowledge and practice, agency thinking and client realities, and global ambition and the lived experience of African and diaspora consumers.

Shaped by an American upbringing and two decades of work in East Africa, Deborah is sought after for her ability to see markets from more than one side. Her personal and working-life communities span continents, informing a practice that connects worlds without flattening their differences.

She is the managing partner and co-founder of The Brief, a pan-African strategy practice. Her client work has been featured in The New York Times and Condé Nast Traveler, her writing has appeared in The New Times, and she has been featured in Essence.

Her strategic direction and creative solutions have been showcased at The Global Coffee Conference 2026, Expo 2020 Dubai, CHOGM 2022, Smart Africa, Meetings Africa 2025, the WEF C4IR Global AI Summit on Africa 2025 and the Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremonies, and through Visit Rwanda, RwandAir, CMU Africa and NBA Africa BAL.

She has worked with global brands including Heineken, through its Rwandan company Bralirwa, as well as Coca-Cola, Marriott and Zipline; philanthropies such as Bloomberg Philanthropies, Nike Foundation/Girl Effect and Mastercard Foundation; and United Nations programmes including UNICEF and UNDP. She has managed annual client budgets of up to $1 million, shaped strategy for design proposals ranging from $200,000 to $60 million, and built brand systems designed to outgrow their first location. Much of this work brought public institutions and private enterprise together, in collaboration with Government of Rwanda ministries and agencies and in support of national priorities.

Earlier in her career, Deborah worked in account planning at U.S. agencies Campbell-Ewald, on GM/Chevrolet, and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, on MINI Cooper, IKEA and Virgin Atlantic. She holds a master’s degree in mass communications, with a concentration in account planning, from VCU Brandcenter, and a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Institute of Technology, with an emphasis on marketing and a minor in design from the Institute of Design.
